School Nurse

Welcome to the Cambria-Friesland School Districts School Nurse Webpage! The goal of school health services is to promote wellness and remove or reduce health related barriers to learning. We know that students who are healthy learn more and students who learn more are healthier.  I am in the district 2 days a week,  but am available by phone or email at other times. My contact information is below. I wish all students a healthy and rewarding educational experience and please do not hesitate to contact me if you feel I could benefit your student.

Health Guidelines for School

We do our part at school to minimize the spread of illness by encouraging healthy habits and sending children home when they are sick. Should your child become ill or injured at school, we will do our best to make them comfortable, however, we are not staffed to care for ill/seriously injured children in our classrooms or office. We use, and ask that you use, the following guidelines when determining if your child should be kept home from school:

Fever: If your child has a fever of 100.4 or greater they will be sent home. They should not return to school until they have been fever free for 24 hours, without the use of fever reducing medications.

Upset Stomach/Vomiting/Diarrhea: If your child vomits or has more than 2 episodes of diarrhea at school they will be sent home. Your child will need to stay home until they have been symptom free from vomiting or diarrhea for 24 hours. Exceptions to this rule may come from administration/school nurse.

Upper Respiratory Infections: Please be sure your child knows proper etiquette for coughing and sneezing and will use tissues appropriately. Your child may attend school as long as symptoms are not severe (persistent cough, constant/thick nasal drainage, inability to stay awake during class).

Other Diagnosed Infections requiring Medications for Treatment: If your child receives a diagnosis of Strep Throat, Ear Infection, Sinus Infection, etc - they will need to be on the prescribed treatment for that condition for the amount of time recommended by the Wisconsin Department of Health Services and have improvement of symptoms before returning to school.

Chronic Medical Conditions

Parents/guardians are requested to inform the School Nurse of any health conditions and/or special health care procedures that need to be performed while your student is at school. If your child has asthma, diabetes, seizures, severe allergies,  or any other condition that may require an emergency care plan or procedure, please see me at registration or print off one of the forms in the red box on the right side of the page, complete, and return to school prior to the start of the school year. Health plans and  paperwork need to be updated annually.

Medications

The CFSD offers stock medications to students as a convenience to families. The following medications are available to students: acetaminophen, ibuprofen, diphenhydramine, antacids, cough drops, hydrocortisone cream, triple antibiotic ointment. Parental consent is required  ONCE during a student’s tenure with the district. Medication will not be administered without a consent form. Dosing will be based on package instructions. Parents can contact the school nurse or office staff at any time if they wish to revoke their consent for stock medications. Forms can be completed and turned in at registration and can also be found in the red box at the top right of this page.

If you would like other medications not listed above available to your student at school, please complete the medication consent form, found in the red box at the top right of this page.  Please return the form  prior to the start of the school year.

Health Screenings

School Health Services provides vision, dental and hearing screenings. Grades 3K-5, 7, 10, and 12 are offered vision screening annually.. Seal a Smile will screen and apply sealants and fluoride for elementary and middle school students who sign up. Hearing screenings will be offered to all kindergarten students.  Additional vision and hearing screenings are done at the request of a teacher or parent for all students throughout the school year.

What is Nut Aware?

CFSD is a peanut & tree nut aware school district and, at times, may have peanut/tree nut FREE classrooms. This means that we are limiting the amount of these products in our school for the safety of all our students. There are no peanuts or tree nuts purchased or served for our school meals. Some pre-packaged foods served for meals or snacks may be processed in a facility that processes peanuts or tree nuts, but the item served does not contain peanuts or tree nuts.

We ask that no homemade baked goods be brought into our classrooms at any point during the year. Please check the labels of the pre-packaged baked good or snack to ensure that it does not contain nuts. Snacks that do not contain labels will be returned home. We ask that you do your best to avoid sending peanut and tree nut containing products in your student’s lunches. We also ask that you teach your child to wash their hands and brush their teeth before coming to school each day, especially after eating anything containing peanuts/tree nuts. Please note that hand sanitizer is not effective against removing allergens.

If your child has a life-threatening allergy, contact the school nurse.  An Emergency Health Plan will be created that meets the needs of your child. This will be made in conjunction with you, your child's physician, and the school nurse.
